DESCRIPTION:The President’s Council on Transforming Lives in partnership with Wabanaki REACH will host the showing of the Award winning Documentary “Dawnland\,” A Documentary About Cultural Survival and Stolen Children – The Story of the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The documentary film screening will take place as a hybrid event on Tuesday\, April 14th 11:00am – 1:00pm. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion. \nThis event will be primarily hosted in the Farber Forum\, Jewett Hall\, UMA Augusta Campus. Light refreshments will be served. \nThe UMA Rockland Center and the UMA Brunswick Center will also have in-person viewing rooms for anyone to join. \nAttendees may also join remotely via Zoom. \nThis event is open to all UMA students\, staff\, faculty\, and the general public. All are welcome. \n\n“In Maine\, a historic investigation—the first government-sanctioned truth and reconciliation commission in the United States—begins a bold journey. For over two years\, Native and non-Native commissioners travel across Maine. They gather testimony and bear witness to the devastating impact of the state’s child welfare practices on families in Maliseet\, Micmac\, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribal communities. These familiar refrains reflect a narrow\, commercialized image of yoga built on polished photos\, perfectionism\, and consumer culture. \nBut yoga is far more expansive—and far more accessible—than that.\nJoin Sarah Hentges\, PhD\, E-RYT 500\, professor at the Âé¶čAPP and author of Demystifying American Yoga: Embodied Movement for Individual and Collective Transformation\, for a dynamic and engaging presentation that challenges common myths and explores yoga as a practice of embodied awareness\, personal agency\, and collective transformation. \nDrawing on her scholarship\, teaching\, and experience as a studio founder\, Sarah invites participants to reconsider what yoga is\, who it’s for\, and how it can serve as a practical tool for navigating everyday life. DESCRIPTION:Join Âé¶čAPP JEDI Committee\, in collaboration with Voices for Humanity (a UMA-alumni led community group)\, for a screening of Divine Intervention (2002). The surreal black comedy follows a day in the life of a Palestinian man living in Nazareth whose girlfriend lives several checkpoints away in the West Bank city of Ramallah. \nThe event will begin at 5 pm in the Fireside Lounge\, with the film starting at 5:15 pm to give guests time to settle in. \nParticipants may also join via Zoom. \nThis is a free event\, open to all.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: "Westermann: Memorial to the Idea of Man If He Was an Idea"
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to a film screening of “Westermann: Memorial to the Idea of Man If He Was an Idea” in the Farber Forum on April 30 at 3:45 p.m.. \nWe will screen the documentary (which is 91 minutes long)\, then gather in the Drawing studio nearby for an open studio/reception. \nCurrent and prospective art students\, members of our military community\, lovers of documentary films\, and all art-curious folks are welcome to this screening. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Cultural Events Council\, the Art Department\, and the Military & Veteran Services Department. \nAbout the film:\n“Westermann: Memorial to the Idea of Man If He Was an Idea” is a documentary film about the life and work of artist\, marine\, and acrobat H.C. (Cliff) Westermann. As a veteran of World War II and the Korean War\, Westermann’s dramatic personal history can be traced through beguiling\, surreal artworks he made to process the horrors he witnessed on the front lines. In so doing\, he became an inspiration for many young artists. The film reveals ways in which Westermann protected his empathic spirit – and sanity – by ‘sculpting’ his body\, artworks\, friendships\, his hand-hewn house\, and his art-filled letters to his dearest friends and family. The documentary explores themes of resiliency\, hope\, and humor with a script culled from over a thousand of Westermann’s letters and one audio-interview – voiced by four-time Academy-Award nominee Ed Harris.
