DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Dr. Sara Flowers\, PI & Director of ATLaS Scholars\nWHEN: Thursday\, March 26\, 2026\, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM\nWHERE: Online via Zoom™\nRegister here to receive the Zoom link \nPlease join us for Dr. Flowers’ Research Colloquium presentation investigating the developmental impact of the Norwegian Folk High School (FHS) system\, using Fosen Folkehøgskole as a primary case study for understanding the “ecology” of emerging adulthood. Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Jeffrey Arnett’s emerging adulthood\, Uri Bronfenbrenner’s ecology of human development\, and N.F.S. Grundtvig’s “Living Curriculum\,” the study examines how structured gap years facilitate personal growth and social formation (dannelse). The research employed a postmodern ethnographic approach\, featuring a two-week immersive study at Fosen-Rissa\, Norway\, which included eight multinational interviews and participant observation in traditional crafts (håndverk) and self sufficiency (sjølberging). \nThe findings highlight several core themes: a necessary break from “school fatigue” and competitive academic pressures; the fostering of social intelligence through communal living (fellesskap); and the development of self-awareness through practical\, results-oriented learning. Students frequently described the FHS environment as a transformative “thinking pause” that encourages independence and personal responsibility through a flattened teacher-student hierarchy. Furthermore\, the study identifies the school as a sanctuary for identity formation\, particularly for students navigating life transitions or recovering from previous crises. DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Presentation on March 26th\, at 5:30 p.m. \nThe Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine (HHRCMaine) is delighted to announce that the third distinguished lecturer for this year is Kit Thomason Crossman\, Executive Director of The Maine Human Rights Commission (MHRC)—the state agency responsible for enforcing Maine’s anti-discrimination laws and promoting equal opportunity for all. \nKit’s talk will be on March 26th\, at 5:30 p.m. in a hybrid format\, live at the Michael Klahr Center or on Zoom. \nHer presentation will explore how MHRC investigates complaints\, promotes compliance\, and provides resources to communities to prevent bias and foster inclusion.
