Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Jeffrey Arnett’s emerging adulthood\, Uri Bronfenbrenner’s ecology of human development\, and N.F.S. Grundtvig’s “Living Curriculum\,” the study examines how structured gap years facilitate personal growth and social formation (dannelse). The research employed a postmodern ethnographic approach\, featuring a two-week immersive study at Fosen-Rissa\, Norway\, which included eight multinational interviews and participant observation in traditional crafts (hĂĄndverk) and self sufficiency (sjølberging). \nThe findings highlight several core themes: a necessary break from “school fatigue” and competitive academic pressures; the fostering of social intelligence through communal living (fellesskap); and the development of self-awareness through practical\, results-oriented learning. Students frequently described the FHS environment as a transformative “thinking pause” that encourages independence and personal responsibility through a flattened teacher-student hierarchy. Furthermore\, the study identifies the school as a sanctuary for identity formation\, particularly for students navigating life transitions or recovering from previous crises. The presentation concludes by discussing the potential translation of these developmental values to the United States education system\, advocating for a shift toward nonacademic value and the promotion of holistic human development over competition. \nRegister here to receive the Zoom link \nThursday\, March 26\, 2026 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM on Zoom™\nEvent Organizer contact: Dr. Christopher Lage (clage@maine.edu) URL:/event/the-ecology-of-emerging-adult-development-a-study-of-fosen-folkehogskole/ LOCATION:Online CATEGORIES:Alumni,Faculty & Staff,General Public,Students ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/16x9-anabeast-U43qTqDUE9I-unsplash.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20260326T140000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20260326T143000 DTSTAMP:20260418T112006 CREATED:20260323T141619Z LAST-MODIFIED:20260323T141619Z UID:10008652-1774533600-1774535400@www.uma.edu SUMMARY:The Eclectic Moose Visits Sesame Street DESCRIPTION:Join Kevin Daniels\, host of the Eclectic Moose on WUMA\, as he plays music from Sesame Street. \nShow times are Tuesday at 10 am\, Thursday at 2 pm\, and Saturday at 1 pm.
