DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Dr. Sara Flowers\, PI & Director of ATLaS Scholars\nWHEN: Thursday\, March 26\, 2026\, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM\nWHERE: Online via Zoom™\nRegister here to receive the Zoom link \nPlease join us for Dr. Flowers’ Research Colloquium presentation investigating the developmental impact of the Norwegian Folk High School (FHS) system\, using Fosen Folkehøgskole as a primary case study for understanding the “ecology” of emerging adulthood. Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Jeffrey Arnett’s emerging adulthood\, Uri Bronfenbrenner’s ecology of human development\, and N.F.S. Grundtvig’s “Living Curriculum\,” the study examines how structured gap years facilitate personal growth and social formation (dannelse). The research employed a postmodern ethnographic approach\, featuring a two-week immersive study at Fosen-Rissa\, Norway\, which included eight multinational interviews and participant observation in traditional crafts (håndverk) and self sufficiency (sjølberging). \nThe findings highlight several core themes: a necessary break from “school fatigue” and competitive academic pressures; the fostering of social intelligence through communal living (fellesskap); and the development of self-awareness through practical\, results-oriented learning. Students frequently described the FHS environment as a transformative “thinking pause” that encourages independence and personal responsibility through a flattened teacher-student hierarchy. Furthermore\, the study identifies the school as a sanctuary for identity formation\, particularly for students navigating life transitions or recovering from previous crises. DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Presentation on March 26th\, at 5:30 p.m. \nThe Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine (HHRCMaine) is delighted to announce that the third distinguished lecturer for this year is Kit Thomason Crossman\, Executive Director of The Maine Human Rights Commission (MHRC)—the state agency responsible for enforcing Maine’s anti-discrimination laws and promoting equal opportunity for all. \nKit’s talk will be on March 26th\, at 5:30 p.m. in a hybrid format\, live at the Michael Klahr Center or on Zoom. \nHer presentation will explore how MHRC investigates complaints\, promotes compliance\, and provides resources to communities to prevent bias and foster inclusion. Participants will gain practical insight into current trends in civil rights issues in Maine and learn how schools and individuals can contribute to advancing the Commission’s mission of fairness and equity. \nWe hope you can join us to learn more about what MHRC is doing in our state\, the Director’s view on its role in this moment in history\, and share your thoughts during the question and answer session. \nThe event is free; please register and indicate if you will attend in person or virtually. DESCRIPTION:Join an enriching conversation in French with renowned researcher and storyteller Jean-Claude Redonnet\, author of Madlin Leblanc: la jeune Acadienne de Falmouth\, Maine. The discussion will focus on his work\, its historical and cultural context\, and the enduring Acadian presence in Maine. \nThrough the character of Madlin Leblanc\, Jean-Claude Redonnet brings to life the journey of a young Acadian woman grappling with issues of identity\, language\, family\, and resilience on the coast of Maine. The book explores the lasting impact of Acadian history and brutal displacement\, as well as the power of cultural transmission between generations. Rooted in rigorous historical research and a strong sense of place\, the novel sheds light on a defining chapter in Maine’s Francophone heritage while giving voice to a deeply human story. \nThe event will take place on March 28 at 3 p.m. at the Â鶹APP\, Randall Student Center\, Fireside Lounge. \nA $5 registration fee is required for this event.
