Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Jeffrey Arnett’s emerging adulthood\, Uri Bronfenbrenner’s ecology of human development\, and N.F.S. Grundtvig’s “Living Curriculum\,” the study examines how structured gap years facilitate personal growth and social formation (dannelse). The research employed a postmodern ethnographic approach\, featuring a two-week immersive study at Fosen-Rissa\, Norway\, which included eight multinational interviews and participant observation in traditional crafts (hĂĄndverk) and self sufficiency (sjølberging). \nThe findings highlight several core themes: a necessary break from “school fatigue” and competitive academic pressures; the fostering of social intelligence through communal living (fellesskap); and the development of self-awareness through practical\, results-oriented learning. Students frequently described the FHS environment as a transformative “thinking pause” that encourages independence and personal responsibility through a flattened teacher-student hierarchy. Furthermore\, the study identifies the school as a sanctuary for identity formation\, particularly for students navigating life transitions or recovering from previous crises. The presentation concludes by discussing the potential translation of these developmental values to the United States education system\, advocating for a shift toward nonacademic value and the promotion of holistic human development over competition. \nRegister here to receive the Zoom link \nThursday\, March 26\, 2026 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM on Zoom™\nEvent Organizer contact: Dr. Christopher Lage (clage@maine.edu) URL:/event/the-ecology-of-emerging-adult-development-a-study-of-fosen-folkehogskole/ LOCATION:Online CATEGORIES:Alumni,Faculty & Staff,General Public,Students ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/16x9-anabeast-U43qTqDUE9I-unsplash.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20260326T121500 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20260326T124500 DTSTAMP:20260418T063902 CREATED:20260312T014803Z LAST-MODIFIED:20260312T181021Z UID:10008607-1774527300-1774529100@www.uma.edu SUMMARY:Candidate Visit: Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Business Administration DESCRIPTION:UMA is currently conducting a search for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Business Administration. This panel features three exciting areas of inquiry: \nJessica Winck: Schooling as Constraint in Self-Help Books on Writing\nDescription: Self-help books on writing consistently portray formal education as a negative influence on learning\, writing\, and creativity. In this brief talk\, I explore this portrayal and its possible lessons for the teaching of writing in higher education. \nKay Retzlaff: Laughing on the Inside: Satire\, Status\, and the Irish in the Nineteenth-century US\nHistorian of Irish America Charles Fanning argues that satire is the result of a profound Irish habit of mind\, especially pre-Irish Famine\, which was overwritten by the Famine. His interpretation of why overly simplifies a complex series of events. Fanning overlooked the eras of the various immigrations as well as the gender and class of the immigrants themselves. \nNoel Tague: “The OG Chatbot: Automated Writing as a Foundation for Critical AI Literacy.”\nDescription: Many writing instructors struggle with how to teach AI and writing in ways that align with pedagogical principles\, best practices\, and beliefs in what writing is for. In this presentation\, I offer a foundation for critical AI literacy in the classroom in a lesson plan on automated writing.
