We will be holding virtual information sessions on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, from 6:30 – 7:00 pm EDT.

During these sessions, UMA Mental Health and Human Services Faculty will provide additional information about the program delivery, how you can create a pathway to a Master’s Degree, and the benefits this credential can provide to advance your career opportunities. UMA Admissions Staff will be available to provide information on the application process and ways in which you can pay for a Graduate Certificate.

The UMA Mental Health and Human Services program is now offering an Graduate Certificate in Substance Use Disorders as part of an expansion of the substance use disorder concentration. The program will admit its first cohort in fall 2020 and applications are now being accepted.

“We are very excited about this new program,” stated UMA President Rebecca Wyke. “As a completely online program, the Advance Graduate Certificate will offer current human services professionals the flexibility to obtain a graduate certificate that can lead to career advancement and become a pathway to a Master’s Degree,” President Wyke continued. “It is also consistent with Âé¶ąAPP long-standing mission and history as a leader in distance education.”

The demand for training in the area of substance use disorders is growing exponentially and this new certificate seeks to meet the workforce development needs and societal demands of the current substance use crisis in Maine and across the country. It will also support the State of Maine’s efforts in this area, as outlined in Maine Governor Janet Mills’ .

In particular, the opioid crisis requires a concentrated effort by educational institutions and health care providers to address the need for well-qualified professionals and a well-trained workforce at all levels of the profession knowledgeable of existing treatment services, including the awareness of medically assisted treatment for this population. Additional graduate-level training will help meet the level of knowledge and expertise needed for these positions.

“The curriculum will integrate various evidence-based assessment and treatment protocols as they relate to addressing the needs and recovery of all people impacted by this disease,” explained Kim Lane, UMA Associate Professor of Mental Health & Human Services and Coordinator of the new program.

With the Advanced Graduate Certificate, individuals would also have a pathway to pursue a Master’s Degree. Since Âé¶ąAPP program integrates course work with current academic programming available at its sister institutions within the University of Maine System, students could continue their graduate education at the University of Maine or the University of Southern Maine with some credits easily transferable.

Beginning this fall, the Âé¶ąAPP (UMA) and University of Southern Maine (USM) will offer a . This totally online cybersecurity program, one of the most affordable in the country, is currently accepting applications for its fall 2020 cohort. This also has the distinction of being Âé¶ąAPP first graduate degree program.

This Master’s in Cybersecurity program will prepare graduates for career opportunities in cybersecurity fields including security analysis, information assurance, digital forensics, intelligence, and cyber defense. With billions of dollars in global losses due to cybersecurity exploits and attacks, the need for trained experts is growing at an astonishing rate.

The reports that information security analyst jobs are growing faster than average, with an expected growth of 18% through 2024. Graduates with an M.S. in Cybersecurity will be prepared to fill these new positions.

This online 30-credit graduate program was developed jointly by UMA and USM. Faculty from each institution designed the program to emphasize a theoretical framework with hands-on applications. UMA and USM are well-positioned to offer a joint graduate degree in cybersecurity, as both institutions are located adjacent to state government agencies, and the greater Portland area continues to attract professionals in information technology, biotechnology, law, and business. Thus, students pursuing graduate education have opportunities to interact with numerous public and private entities.

Coursework includes activities with Âé¶ąAPP Maine Cyber Range, a state of the art training center that provides students with realistic and cutting-edge techniques for defending against malicious cyber-attacks, and USM’s two virtual systems clusters.
